Patriotic Summer Berry Trifle

I stumbled upon some berry trifle recipes on social media and decided to try one myself. It’s a simple festive dessert perfect to bring to your next Summer BBQ. There are some variations of this trifle, but not being a fan of confectioners sugar, or adding salt or cream cheese, I decided to do my own thing.  I cannot express how easy it is to make, as there is no baking required and people really love it. I'm not an avid dessert maker after all so I'm just telling you what worked for me.

A trifle dish is of course necessary for this, the dish used here is actually my grandmother’s but there are many quick and affordable options available on Amazon if needed!

Begin by preparing your instant pudding mix according to the box's directions. Vanilla is typically used for this recipe. However, I used lemon this time for a little kick. Make sure to place in refrigerator to let it set for several minutes.

Whipped Cream

In a separate (chilled) bowl, pour entire contents of heavy whipping cream container (1 pint) and mix for several minutes until it thickens. Set aside.

This step can be skipped if Cool Whip is preferred.

Next, wash and begin to slice up your fruit. This time I used strawberries and blueberries only. Of course, feel free to include raspberries and blackberries as desired. Leave several whole strawberries aside untouched for garnish.

Begin to chop up the cake into small cubes. For a healthier option feel free to use angel food cake instead.

This step is optional, of course. Place the ladyfingers up against the sides of the bowl to create a border. I just like how it looked clean and uniform.

  1. Cover entire bottom of bowl with cake pieces for a first layer.

  2. Next, take your pudding and cover the cake pieces for a second layer.

  3. Next, add a fruit for a third layer.

  4. For a final layer, take some of your whipped cream and cover generously.

  5. Begin again with the cake layer, and continue through the steps until complete.

  6. Finally, begin to decorate top with pieces of fruit that were set aside. Refrigerate several hours before serving.
